Create new partition in a 64Gb SD?

Sun Dec 10, 2017 10:59 pm

Hi there,

I'm trying to install everything in a RPI3 and I have a 64Gb Samsung SD (Evo XC). The computer I use is a Mac.
I formatted the card with SD Card Formatter 5.0.0 and in principle it uses ExtFAT so that you can use the 64Gb.
Then I installed raspbian, and it works, but I only see a FAT32 partition which is completely used and I can't do anything else and I don't know if I can create another partition either.
Can I install raspbian in a way that it doesn't reformat the SD? Actually what I want to install mainly is LibreELEC. Any recommendation?

Many thanks!!!

-a- 64GB card formated exFAT is useless ( for NOOBS ) https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... matting.md

-b- installed RASPBIAN anyhow would mean you burned a RASPBIAN image ( ? by etcher? win32diskimager?)
so step -a- formatting not needed.
missing info what file (full name) you downloaded and installed how?

-c- in case that burning RASPBIAN gave you a running system
you should check from there the actual partition layout
( and not from a windows PC where you only see one ( the first 68MB partition )
use the terminal commands
df -Th
and
lsblk
and show the results here.

-d- for working ( and learning linux... ) you should use RASPBIAN ( better burned to a other 8GB SD card )
for download burn LibreELEC https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

-e- if you want both as a multiboot SD card go back to the formatting point,
do it correctly for 64GB cards ( not exFAT )
and download / unzip/ copy the files from
NOOBS full
NOOBS lite
PINN lite
and ( with internet connection ) download install both OS via NOOBS menu.

-f- to the question:
Create new partition in a 64Gb SD
you could do by using RASPBIAN...
install "gparted"
and resize / create ... partitions,
but if you asked this regarding to install openELEC additionally to the already installed RASPBIAN
on that card, sorry, not work that way. ( see -e- for multiboot )

Hi KLL,

Thank you so much for your complete answer. Actually I didn't want to install any specific OS or SW. I just want to be able to watch movies and I'm open to any suggestion. I tried to give as much information as possible, but maybe it was more confusing.
So, knowing that I have a 64Gb and I would like to use it with my RPI3 as media center (kodi and so on), what do you suggest that I do, starting from scratch? Install NOOBS you said, right? What else? Thanks again!!!

If you just want KODI Multimedia Centre Software then install LibreElec, they offer specific downloads for the various Raspberry Pi Boards:

https://libreelec.tv/

Etcher can both unzip and create a bootable SD Card (no formatting required):

https://etcher.io/

The Raspberry Pi OSes can understand FAT 12/16/32 & EXT file systems, for OSX/MacOS and EXT see:

Rather than negativity think outside the box !
