Connecting with ethernet - small problem

Hey there.

At first, sorry if this question has been asked before (and eventually answered), but it started to bother me just now.

The situation is that the only place I can currently plug my raspberry in is in one corner of the room, where the TV is. Now, the router from whom I could 'take' the internet from and supply it to the PI is in the another corner...

The basic problem is that there's no way I can drag ethernet cable through the whole room. I haven't seen that long cables.

What can I eventually do?
Without internet connection I am unable to install essential programs and so on..

The three easiest options...

1. Add a WiFi dongle to the RPi, costs $6 to $10.

2. Use a pair of powerline Ethernet adaptors, costs around $100.

3. Use a portable TV for these essential internet-connected tasks.

Another alternative...set up the Pi close enough to your router to run a Cat-5 cable. Use a PC with an ssh program to log in to Pi remotely. Cost $0...just uses stuff you already have.

This is probably not the answer you're looking for, but you could run a cable through the ceiling. The only other reasonable option would be to invest in a wifi dongle.

Looks like I'll have to look into wifi dongle... Another problem is that it probably takes USB slot (?), which leaves me with only one. This way I would have to use USB Hub.

Depends on what you plan on using it for. I run headless without LAN using only a WiFi dongle, power and HDMI cable to the TV. The other USB port is empty. There is no wired network by the TV...

I do all access over the network using SSH or apps that talk to (if I am using them) XBMC etc...


Oh.. another option... get another Access point and bridge it between it and your access point on the other side of the room. Then you would have "wired" ports by your TV for the RPi and other devices.

Wireless bridge is by far the best answer (find a secondhand router for free-$5, install DD-WRT, change a few settings, done)

Hm. I guess wireless bridge is a proper solution.

By that time, is there any option for me to download some software for my PI ( like C++ compiler perhaps? ) from my PC and install it on my PI by, for example, pendrive or directly modifying my SD card?
That would probably do too.

GCC should already be installed on most of the distros...

Uhm, yeah, I've realised yesterday evening that I can do gcc main.cpp
I still haven't figured out how to make my .out file appear on the screen in an console after running.
