VNC and desktop

Hello,

Sorry for my poor English. My native language is french.

I use Raspbian Stretch on my Raspberry 3 and I would' like use VNC. I want to control my Raspberry from my tablet computer.
When I activate VNC with raspi-config and after I launch the startx command -> I have the desktop without menubar but with only the trash icon.
When I desactivate the VNC option I have de menubar.

Can you help me ?

but after UPDATE UPGRADE that was solved?

hm.. i not used a STARTX for years, so what system setup / changes you made

-a- reboot first

-b- you could use a new raspbian stretch (full) image https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/
( as that happened only with the very first STRETCH version??)
for a fast headless setup can use ssh and wpa_supplicant.conf file trick

-c- and do a UPDATE UPGRADE anyway
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade

cat /proc/version
should show (today) like

Linux version 4.9.59-v7+
