Raspberry Pi 3 Wifi connected but no internet

Thu Oct 26, 2017 3:29 pm

My Raspberry Pi 3 kit has built in wifi. My network is selected and it shows that the Wifi is connected, yet I am not connected to the internet. Upon a browser search I get ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED. Please help! And I have not used an ethernet cable to connect at any point.

What OS are you running?

How did you install it?

How did you connect to your network?

What edits or changes have you made to the OS?
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

What do you get from a wpa_cli status command?

ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED means that theres no DNS server configured. are you using CLI or GUI? try to cat /etc/resolv.conf
to get an ip address you nees to configure the /etc/network/interfaces
also try to get a dhcp lease; # dhclient wlanX
change wlanX to yojr wifi interface name. sudo ifconfig -a

That depends on OS + version.
On RPF / Official Raspbian Jessie & Stretch it's completely wrong...
And sudo is not necessary to run ifconfig.

sudo may be needed to run ifconfig since debian 9 refuses to exec if not using sudo. im using the raspbian stretch 9.1. there are configuration on how to reconnect to internet everywhere so just choose which you prefer

Your wireless lan isn't associated with your access point. wpa_cli status should get something like

Code: Select all

Selected interface 'wlan0'
bssid=30:91:de:ad:be:ef
freq=2427
ssid=redacted
id=4
mode=station
pairwise_cipher=CCMP
group_cipher=TKIP
key_mgmt=WPA2-PSK
wpa_state=COMPLETED
ip_address=192.168.3.14
address=b8:27:eb:99:aa:bb
uuid=ffffeeee-aaaa-bbbb-cccc-99992222dddd

I am using Raspberry Pi 3 with latest Rasbian Stretch and I just started having this problem.

I noticed that it happened right after doing sudo apt-get install and sudo apt-get upgrade so could it maybe be an issue with the latest update?

This is the result of the command wpa_cli status:

Code: Select all

Selected interface 'p2p-dev-wlan0'
wpa_state=DISCONNECTED
p2p_device_address=ba:27:eb:89:7f:05
address=ba:27:eb:cf:fa:be
uuid=acb971c9-406a-5688-a8a1-bb04e0934f19
I've been trying different solutions
I added the following in the file /etc/network/interfaces

Code: Select all

auto lo
iface wlan0 inet manual
wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
iface default inet dhcp
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid "my_netwrok_name"
wpa-psk "my_network_password"
After saving, I can open websites and the problem seems to be solved. However, after reboot I get "No wireless interfaces found" and I am not able to scan or connect to networks until I undo what I did above and reboot again. This is not a practical solution for me anyway because I want the ability to connect to different wifi networks.

Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance for the support.

Hey guys, similar issues with OS Jessie

I have dhcpcd.conf setup with my static IP's, which are being issued correctly by both wifi and ethernet
Ethernet works fine, internet connection all good

Wifi connects fine, internet connection not all good

wpa_cli status gives me the following;

Selected interface 'wlan0'
ssid=TPG FA8D
id=0
mode=station
pairwise_cipher=CCMP
group_cipher=CCMP
key_mgmt=WPA2-PSK
wpa_state=COMPLETED
ip_address=192.168.1.20

Have re-booted, changed settings etc, but cannot get the wifi to give me internet access, anything I am missing?

I have the following in /etc/network/interfaces;

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet manual

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

iface default inet dhcp

I am going to try restoring my OS, and see what happens from default
