USB 3.0 is backward compitible to Pi?

Sun Oct 15, 2017 5:15 pm

Hello, I ordered a Sata to USB adaptor for my pi 3 StarTech USB 3.0 To 2.5 SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Cable / UASP - SATA To USB. Afterward I realized it is for USB 3.0. I understand that Pi 3 has only USB 2.0. Now I wonder if this USB 3.0 is backward compitible to Pi, should I cancel the order? Thanks

USB 3.0 devices should be compatible if it follows the USB standard. Your throughput will be limited to the 2.0 specification so you will not get the full benefit of the USB 3.0 device. If you have any doubts, you should contact the seller or manufacturer for confirmation. It is possible Windows 8 or older OS could have an issue.

Speed wise it should be backward compatible, and just run at USB 2 speed. Power, namely current draw may be an issue though. If the drive wants or needs more current than the Pi can supply via the USB port it may not work reliably, or not at all. If you adapter has its own power supply it won't be an issue though.

I've been using USB 3 to SATA adapters for at least a couple of years and they work fine with Pis. In addition, if some time in the future there is a Pi with native USB 3...you'll be all set for faster mass storage access.
