Sorry but that cable will not work, you need an active adapter to convert the Raspberrypi to VGA and that is just a cable that allows you to convert to VGA if your video card supports that function and the Raspi does not support VGA at all.

http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Audio-Conv ... +converter
The link above is an example of such an adapter but no guarantee that this one works for sure either.

Search the forums for ones tht are known to work for best results.

Hope this helps
If you are more worried about ,spelling, punctuation or grammar you have probably already missed the point so please just move on.

They just don't work :(

Nobody knows why they are advertised and sold but they don't/can't work :(

You either need a monitor with has a DVI input (bit like a VGA one but white and with more pins) and then get a HDMi-DVI cable or if you only have a VGA and are willing to gamble a little - then you get an HDMI-VGA Convertor of this type http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PC-HDMI-to-VG ... 4605e5f734 (Just an exampel not a recomendation - the gamble being that they draw a bit too much power from your Rpi and therefore MAY cause you issues

(But lots of people use them ) :)

I bought one of these and it works flawlessly out-of-the-box. It also comes with a5V @ 2Amp Power Supply which is capable of powering the whole kit and caboodle!

@wheel-nut

Now that looks that the proper device for the job - bit more expensive but still a lot lot cheaper than buying a new hdmi/dvi monitor if you've got a spare VGA one around. :)

Good find :)

I should add that it also has an Audio output Jack socket but I haven't yet managed to get ant audio out of it. I have tried the audio switch trick as described in MagPi but whereas it works in switching it to the RPi audio port, switching it to the HDMI only switches OFF the RPi audio port.

But can you get audio out of the RPi audio jack with the adaptor plugged in as that would be OK for desk mounted speakers/headphones.

YES.

Have a look at MagPi Issue 3 Page 4. It says: ( Note: You can ignore the instructions in Red because the latest release of Raspian has these pre-installed.

INSTALLING THE SOUND DRIVER MODULE
If you intend to have sound through the TV, make sure the
TV volume is up, otherwise connect a 3.5mm headphone
cable from the pi's analogue output to your speakers/stereo
equipment and switch them on.
After logging in type the following at the command prompt:
sudo aptget update
sudo aptget install alsautils
(Answer 'Y' if asked about disk space used)

sudo modprobe snd_bcm2835
If you want sound through the HDMI cable type:
sudo amixer cset numid=3 2
Or if you want sound through the analogue (headphone) socket type:
sudo amixer cset numid=3 1

CRACKED THE SOUND PROBLEM!

I have created a new item to describe this process. Hopefully it will save others a lot of time :)

I bought one of these HDMI to female VGA adapters which are relatively cheap and it works ok

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI. ... OC:GB:3160

I found that you need to plug things in in a certain order. You do need to ensure you power your PI first and blindly allow it to boot. Whilst its doing that plug your vga lead from your monitor into the female VGA socket on the adapter and power up your screen. After a couple of minutes plug your HDMI end of the adapter into the PI and you should see the Raspberry PI logo and login prompt appear before your very eyes.

Hope this helps

@Hotrods79

I think that having to connect in a certain order may be a power supply issue as I don't have any problems.

I took some readings and the current fluctuates during the startup process and connecting the convertor does increase the power consumption.

Have you tried a different power supply?

After a couple of minutes plug your HDMI end of the adapter into the PI and you should see the Raspberry PI logo and login prompt appear before your very eyes.
That will only work if you've force the RPi (via /boot/config.txt) to output to HDMI regardless of whether it detects an HDMI device at boot time or not
