why didn't my VGA-HDMI adapter work when I tried to use it.

Sat Mar 18, 2017 5:25 pm

So I am a REAL BEGINNER.... My friend helped me set up my new Raspberry Pi on his computer and everything functioned nicely. I then game home and tried to set up on my home monitor which was older and only had a VGA plug...I then purchased a costly VGA-HDMI adapter.... tried that and only had a black screen... tried another older monitor and same thing...then took the supplied HDMI cable and plugged Raspberry Pi into my new monitor directly in the HDMI slot on the monitor. EVERYTHING worked...

However...now I have found you here on Forum...under "beginners" I thought I would ask why the other monitors would not work with the purchased adapter? No doubt lots of reasons...but what's your best guess?

A senior citizen in Canada who is next to useless when it comes to computers...but I've gotten this far... even passed my first SCRATCH lesson.... making my Sprite say something!!!

split of message from a thread where it did not belong in (thread hijacking), and replaced subject line to something sane, moved to beginners.

I bought an HDMI to VGA adapter on ebay for about EUR7, Pi Hut sells an adapter for GBP8, Pimoroni sells an adapter for GBP10. If you purchased a costly VGA-HDMI adapter then you may have bought the wrong thing, what is needed is a HDMI (input) to VGA (output) adapter and not VGA (input) to HDMI (output).
