Can't update or upgrade

Hi all.
I have been trying to install a package (VLC) but I keep getting errors. Can't install Motion either.
Then I tried apt-get upgrade , that failed , can't find all sorts of stuff.
I then re-installed Jessie (downloaded on 11/1/2017) which I have used 5 or 6 times without any issues.
Sudo apt-get update or upgrade still wont work. Are there some servers down or something. I can't install anything at all.
Trying to install VLC I get these errors , but I get the same if I do a sudo apt-get upgrade.
Sorry about the formatting I copied it from the terminal window. It goes on for pages and pages , I'm just showing a few lines.
BTW I can browse the internet using Cromium , so my pi does have an internet connection. ping also works :0)

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo apt-get install vlc

I did a fresh install last night on both my pi zero and my pi 3 and while my pi zero can update/upgrade with no problem my pi 3 is having the same issue as you.

My PI2 is also giving the same error :0(
Not sure where to go from here. If it was /is a general Linux upgrade issue
I'd have expected to see a lot more noise on the issue , but nothing out of
the ordinary.
I'm going to try it at work today and see if I get the same results.

We recently split services up among more servers due to ever-increasing demand.

It looks like we are having issues with database replication from the machine that scans the mirrors to the machine that runs the public mirror redirection service.

I have changed the replication settings and done a forced update of the db. The liquidtelecom mirror is now correctly showing as offline.

Please tell me if you have any further problems.

Phew , thought I was going nuts. I'm sure that is what the problem was , I'll
come back if the issue is NOT fixed.

You are not going nuts, it would appear that more servers are hosting worldwide, and for some reason they are not synching. It happened to me yesterday.

Fresh install of Raspbian on my Pi Zero. When running update, it gets past the archive.raspberrypi.org links pretty quick, then stalls for a while. First time through I couldnt get any mirrordirector links, second time the same, third time it seems to get the first 3 (contrib, non-free, and rpi armhf packages, but then sits at 100% [Waiting for headers] for a few minutes and then error, can't connect.

I too have an up to date (as of last week) Jessie on a Pi3 and am struggling to install pycurl.
It took a good 5 minutes before the action completed...
sudo apt-get install python-pycurl
(stuck on waiting for headers)
