Debian wheezy Vs Alfa AWUS036NH

Mon Sep 10, 2012 2:56 pm

I am running Debian Wheezy and looking to use my ALFA Network AWUS036NH WIFI Adapter on my RaspPi. Does anyone know where I can find a Vlog on how to set this up. From what I have read I need Ralink firmware and aircrack-ng.

I have always used window based products and am a little lost as to how to set this all up. I have tried to download programs for the Pi but aint a clue as to how to install them. Have followed a few how to guides but things never seem to go my way and almost every time get some sort of error message.

Still waiting for the one that says you are the last person on earth please dont forget to turn off the lights when you are done (If you get what I mean)

Thanks for all the advice in advance.

I hope you try using that Wifi Adapter together with an active USB Hub?
This Adapter is one of these high Power WarDriving Wifi Adapters (i own an old Alfa from there very first badge) and i think it will need much more Power from the USB Port than the Pi can handle.

Mine (plugged into a Hub) worked more or less Out of the Box. No apt-get install required.

You need to configure the wireless network (I used the rather excellent new book for reference http://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-Us ... sim_kinc_1 - though it appears to have gone up in price!).
I had to configure /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/wpa.conf - that was it.

In the mortal words of Yoda---> HUH?

Ok maybe I should clear up a few things here. The AWUS is the one I use on my p.c at home. The reason I decided to use it is because when I checked RPI Compatibility list of wireless devices it had it on that list and I already had it. As per Linux terms I am a complete newbie as much as I like what I see when it comes down to it I am still lost as to what I need to do when loading programs and checking information.

Now is saying that I am running Wheezy as the RPI site said it was a beginner program I have tried to load of there programs into the system and have yet to succeed in doing so (personally I reckon computers just dont like me but I wanna learn). I have tried to read some of the information out there but feel it is all going over my head in a big way.

Please know that I really do appreciate all the help I get but in saying that I really ain't clued up when it comes down to it.

Many thanks

Matthew

connect your stuff
start the Pi
log in
open a terminal (if not already in console)
run those two *bolded* commands
make a picture of the results in each case

looks ok
run sudo apt-get install firmware-ralink just in case

and then follow this guide ( starting from: Add adapter definition to network config - eg: sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces - add the wlan0 section: ): http://elinux.org/RPi_Peripherals
