HDMI to VGA Adaptor

Sun Sep 09, 2012 11:47 pm

Hello,

I'm not sure if this has been discussed, but . . .

I would very much like to know where in Australia I could source a HDMI to VGA adaptor. I'm attempting to put together a package for students. We have the VGA screens but no way other than an adaptor to use them. The adaptor needs to be a 15 pin connection. 19 pin adaptors (which I think I can easily source) don't meet our needs. It would be nice if a 15 pin adaptor could be found. I really don't want to go down the path of multiple adoptors piggy-backing each other. We are trying to keep it all nice an simple.

Any suggestions would be great.

Cheers

Gary

Oh, it has been discussed, and extensively.
Adapters do exist, but most are in the $100 range, look for "neweer" brand, or read up the wiki.
One warning, do not attempt to power the adapter from the PI, as it can only deliver about 200mA, and most adapters use much more. You could put more power on the cathode of D1, but that means patching the PI, on the other hand externally powered adapters are even more expensive.

Often a better solution would be to source some second hand VGA (LCD) monitors with a DVI-D input, as just a different cable is all you need to connect those to the PI. Only HDMI audio isn't supported with those.

I've seen externally powered converters for under $30... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0057U ... 01_s00_i00

They seem to be getting cheaper each day, I wonder if the increased sales that is driving prices lower is caused by the PI.

Thanks for the info. I think I may have found my supplier here in Aus.

Looks like you found your solution already, so your problem is solved.

I was just searching for ways to do this using the composite out, and found that there are solutions for composite to vga too.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PC-Laptop-Compo ... 43aec4c95e

It will be slightly cheaper than the hdmi to vga converter, but it will limit the output to 720x576 resolution when using composite out.
Cheapest way to hock up the Pi is to use it on a TV with composite in (RCA), or Scart (via a cheap RCA/Scart adaptor).
Also check your VGA monitors, a few models also feature a composite in.

Lots of us have had great sucess with this sort of cheap adaptor without encountring problems but YMMV :)

It doesn't look as though it has any kind of active converter build in so will not work.
Look for one with a built in chip that converts from the digital HDMI to the analog vga signal.

Find a second hand monitor with a DVI input. Its not a new standard, its been around since the late 90's. Cheap monitors didn't bother with them (and often still don't). I have a monitor from 2003 that has one (well I did until I sold it a a couple of weeks back). I've one sat on my desk now from 2006. Then its a cheap simple cable to connect to HDMI. Composite is OK as a last resort but its far from satisfactory as a working solution. The dash to laptops and tablets means there's a lot of them around. Your local computer shop probably has a couple sat in the back........

Using a flat screen monitor with a VGA input is a travesty at best. Convert a nice digital signal from the PC's graphics system to analogue to squirt it down a VGA cable into a monitor where it is converted back to digital to display on the screen. VGA is analogue because it was designed to work with a CRT monitor with is old school analogue, most people chucked those out years ago, but its primitive interface lives on.
