Pixel workspaces

Fri Dec 09, 2016 2:20 pm

I installed a recent Raspbian/Jessie on my RPi3 and the Pixel desktop only has one workspace. Is there a way to add more? None of the preferences menu include this.

Thanks in advance.

My Raspbian setup notes say "install obconf to setup desktops and change mouse focus rules".

To increase the number of desktops:
Click middle mouse-button on desktop; left-click on 'Add new desktop'.
You can switch between desktops from this same menu.

Optional: to add desktop identifier to taskbar:
Right-click on taskbar and select 'Add / Remove Panel Items'.
Click 'Panel Applets'
In 'Panel Applets' window click 'Add'
In 'Add plugin to panel' window select 'Desktop number / Workspace name' (scroll down to near bottom of list)
Click 'Up' or 'Down' to move it to desired position on the taskbar
Add and move a spacer by the same method if you wish
Then click 'OK'.

If your mouse doesn't have a middle button the old way to achieve to add desktops is by editing a file:
In Filemanager: show hidden files
Open /home/pi/.config/openbox/lxde-pi-rc.xml in a text editor.
Find <desktops> and set to required number (e.g.2)
Re-boot.

Yes I only have a trackpad keyboard so there isn't a middle mouse button but I found an option "Show Window Manager Menus on Desktop clicks" on the desktop menu. That then showed a totally different menu including "Desktops >" which included a "Add new desktop" option.
:D

But now the original menu has vanished. Hmmm.
