Power supply

Tue Nov 22, 2016 1:56 pm

Ive a pi3 set up to display a webpage on a tv monitor.

It is powered by standard 240v and then just a hdmi cable attaching it to the monitor.

When we turn off the monitor , then the pi also switches off.
Is there a way to allow the pi to continue to be switched on after the monitor switches off, or when the monitor switches on teh pi switches back on ?

Can you clarify what you mean by "It is powered by standard 240v and then just a hdmi cable attaching it to the monitor"?
(Given that a Pi requires 5V DC then, I'm guessing that your "standard 240v" is just the power lead to the monitor so what powers your Pi?)

Apologies, what I mean is the Pi is powered via the 5v dc and the pi is connected to the monitor via a hdmi cable

O.K. that confirms that the Pi was not being powered by, say, a USB port on the monitor. Are you sure the Pi has turned off (what's the red PoWeR led and green ACTivity led's status?) or is it just that, when you switch the monitor back on, you no longer have a display?

That's very odd - unless the monitor's powering the Pi's PSU, or the PSU is not connected to the Pi correctly (and it's somehow, getting some power via the HDMI cable). Before this was happening did you always shut down the Pi correctly and observe ~10 green ACTivity led flashes followed by just the RED PoWeR led on? (If not, you may now have corrupted the filesystem on the uSDHC card). I think we need a photograph of the setup to check exactly how things are linked together.

Where is the 5v for the Pi coming from? Is it a PSU plugged into a mains circuit, or is it coming either directly (aux power) or indirectly (USB hub) from the monitor? How are you switching off the monitor? Are you using the monitors own power switch or are you dropping power from a surge protector or breaker bar? If a surge protector or breaker bar, is the PSU for the Pi plugged into the same bar?

Easiest way is that Raspberry powered continuously from a wall adapter. It cost almost nothing, but immediatelly ready to use after powering the TV. It also best for the Pi, not switching on and off all the time.

Update on this.....

When the Monitor switches off it seems to switch off the Pi... ( I persume the monitor is switching of because of no input )

But, Ive now plugged in a wireless mouse and keyboard into the pi and the effect is that the Monitor now doesnt switch off automaticly , but the Pi goes into sleep mode after about an hour , but a quick flick of the mouse wakes it back up. so is there a way of stopping the pi going into sleep mode

Something doesn't add up, even if the Pi was sleeping you'd still have at least the power LED lit.

The Pi doesn't sleep, it blanks the screen...

This thread makes no sense to me, will someone please bring me back to reality or am I stuck in this quantum universe. :?: :?: :?:

If the red led isn't on, then power is low or not there at all.
If the Pi can be woken by a mouse-flick, power is still there.
So the power supply is suspect.

I suspect a PEBKAC error, I could be wrong but it's the only thing that makes sense at the moment.

I am trying to learn more about Raspi and when I make any changes, I like to know what I am changing.
Where would I find documentation about the above script. What do the commands do? What commands and parameters are exposed?

TIA,
Steve

I only ask this after a long Google search. I can't find anyplace that explains, what is LXDE, or what does @xset do?
All of the intro to Raspian go straight from Freshman class to post-grad level. There's little in the middle.
