Is there some way to format an SD card / install NOOBS on it using the Pi itself?
As in, plug a USB SD card reader into the Pi, insert fresh-out-the packet SD card into the reader and wind up with a card that would work for a Pi Zero?
NB. an additional card - obviously you'd need to already have an OS SD card in the Pi to do all this!
Total Pi beginner so apologies if there's something obvious I've missed.
Follow instructions relating to Linux:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/noobs/bl ... /README.md
+1
However, if you don't need NOOBS' "multi-boot" option, ie. just require Raspbian you could use the Linux "image install" method - FWIW, screenshots & link to the main (RPF) instructions can be found here:**

Trev.
** NB. I'd previously installed GParted on my P3B - that's not necessary for the install, but helps provide more (screenshot-based) info. w.r.t. the "underlying process".
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm
