Using battery to pwer pi and hooking up usb hub

Fri Oct 28, 2016 8:15 pm

I'm trying to hook up one of these http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5 ... SX425_.jpg

The female micro usb plug on the left is for aditional power. I striped the whole thing but cant get it to work with my piczero or rather when i connect it the pi doesnt power up.

Here's what I did: I connectrd the D+ and D— wires to the correct pads. Then I connected the 5v and gnd wires to the correct pads under the pwr micro usb plug on the pi. Hooked up like this the pi boots up but the hub doesn't work because it needs more power. So i stripped the plug designated for external power. I soldered the 5v and gnd wires (the only wires in this cable) to the same pads as before so now two 5v and two gnd wires are soldered to the same pad. Hooked up like this the pi doesn't power on. What am i doing wrong? Should i remove any wires or am I doing this wrong completely?

Also... For now I'm hooking the pi up to power throught USB. But at the end I'll be coonecting a battery to the same pads as the USB 5v and gnd wires.

I cannot follow your description of what you have done but one piece of information may help you.

That item is intended to be used with a USB device operating in host mode. A USB host should supply power. Therefore power fed into the bottom left connector in the photo will NOT be passed to the micro-USB plug at the top. That is how it should be, not a design fault.

It gets bad reviews on Amazon. Whether that is because a lot of them are actually faulty or because buyers don't understand the above limitation, I don't know.

I tested it with my tablet before I started dissambling it and it worked like it should. So... yeah. That doesn't really anwser any of my question though. Even if power wasn't passed on to the top micro usb why would the pi just flat out refuse to power on when the wires of the power are connected?.
