Wheezy setup on non-pi hardware?

Fri Aug 31, 2012 4:23 pm

I am going to be working on some projects from the adafruit.com website, but I wanted to know if it was possible to pre-emptively begin getting used to the wheezy.

Is it possible to install wheezy on a non-RPi device? I had tried with some toss out shuttles my work lets us abuse, but have been having issues running the boot. I am wondering if wheezy is configured to specifically look for an SD card or if that is just a hardware requirement for the physical RPi device.

Wheezy is just a Debian variant with two options you can run it in command line where it is to all intents and purposes a Linux server so if you obtain almost any of the Debian derived server images then your running the same (ok you will have a lot more memory available). ;)

Typing startx activates the second state

The second state is what you will see once you run startx this is the RaspberryPi Gui (LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) you can find out more about this here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LXDE

The Default desktop has shortcuts for
Idle (Python 2.7.3),
Debian Refrence (Shortcut to the embedded refrence material on the Debian image),
Idle 3 (Python3.2.3),
Python Games (Shortcut to a menu of pre written games written in Python)
Scratch (Programming Language),
Midori (Webbrowser) ,
LXTerminal (Access to command line from the desktop),

Ok I was hoping as much. I noticed some downloads for the PI hardware had option of ARM based and I was hoping Wheezy going to run into issues. I will try at home on not so trashy computers and see if I get better luck there.

Thank you

Yes the Kernel of the Wheezy install is Arm based so you can't use that image but all of it can be emulated.

My previous post is just the description of what you need if you want to practice.

If you install the Wheezy image on an SD Card you can however view the setup from any other Linux instalation.

Get back if thats unclear I have the thread on watch.
