Using a hat - best way to switch out cameras?

Sat Sep 03, 2016 3:22 pm

Howdy,

I just got the Sense-Hat and am having a great time with it. However, it's a little tricky to attach a PiCamera to the board, once the Hat is on. You can see the slot for the Camera slip, on the right side by the Raspberry Pi symbol.

I have the PiCamera v2, and the NOiR camera, which I would like to play around with. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how to easily switch out the cameras. Right now, I have to take the Sense-Hat off completely, and re-thread the new camera through the hole, and plug back into the Pi.

Is there something like a "male to female" extender, that I plug into the Pi, but the other end has a female part that I can then plug the camera "cord" in to? (Note that I'm not looking for a camera cable extender, but a way to swap out the cameras more easily when a Hat or something is preventing easy access).

Or am I just stuck removing the Sense-Hat (or any hat for that matter) every time? Thanks for any ideas!

This item was suggested to me when I was interested in switching between cameras, it might be suitable for you, although from memory it was expensive.

A dual port module is also available.
There must be an easier way!!!!!
I hope there is.....I haven't found it yet.

Leave the cable permanently connected at the Pi. When you need to swap modules disconnect them at the camera end of the cable.

You can bend back the cable just after the hard part and run it back under the HAT and then just disconnect at the Camera side.

I have three A+ setup like this, oddly the cables do not mind the sharp bend at all.

They have also been taken apart and out and rebuilt with no problems.
The advantage is it then does not get in the way of the joystick or LEDs.
