need more usb ports

Thu Jul 07, 2016 4:14 pm

Hi. I have a Raspberry Pi Model B which has 2 usb ports. I currently have my mouse and keyboard plugged into them. I just got a wifi adapter that needs a usb port in order to be plugged in. How do I use 3 usb devices if I only have 2 usb ports? Is there a way to add another port?
Thank you very much for your help!

You could add a powered USB 2 hub. You can find them many places in different numbers of ports.

Just like every other computer ever made, you can get a USB hub that'll let you add more ports.

Search on any website you buy electronics from. Can probably find a bunch for $10.

Unless it is the very early B with USB poly fuses fitted (green components marked F1 and F2), you should be able to get away with a cheap unpowered USB hub available for £1 at your local pound shop.

Most mice and keyboards will use very little power (<100mA each) and even if the WiFi dongle takes a fair bit the Pi should be able to supply enough with a good PSU.
