Where is the start button?

Sat Apr 16, 2016 10:28 am

I am a complete beginner to the Raspberry PI. I purchased a P3 starter kit from PIHut which had the preloaded micro SD card. I assembled the kit, connected to the internet and then chose to install Raspbian as operating system.

At the end of this process the screen displayed loads of code lines and then displayed the GUI screen(As it does on subsequent boots of the system).

At no time did this show me any password or user id but when I click on the "Terminal" icon I get the command line "pi@raspberrypi:~ $" so I assume I'm in user Pi.

Looking at the web I have read that I can get to the command line interface by pressing the "start button" but I can see no "start button" on any menu. Is the "Start button" actually the "Run" item on the drop down from "Menu"?

"Start" is an ugly "microsoftism".

Look on the taskbar at the top and there's a button marked "Menu".

In my grammatical universe, the word "menu" is more descriptive than the word "start", since it describes the thing that will appear when you click it.

Hi Dougie,
Thanks for replying. I still don't see an icon(or menu item) with the word " Start".
Does the "terminal" icon perform the same function?

Sorry but it's always difficult when we don't necessarily see the same screens.

Are you using a TV as the monitor? I suspect this may be the case and if so it is not displaying the output from the Pi correctly and your start/menu button is out of sight off the edge of the screen somewhere!

If so try playing with your TV HDMI settings, PC mode or something along the lines of "don't mess with the signal" option would be handy. If you have an older TV you can force options from the Pi by putting lines in your config.txt file - there are several threads about this but the HDMI sticky is the place to start.

Assuming you are using raspbian there is no 'Start'.

If you want a terminal window to enter a command then click on the small black screen icon on the task bar...

Clicking the Menu icon is similar to Windows 'Start' in that it gives you a menu of options..

To get the "Terminal" (LXTerminal ?) you might
need to navigate through this "Start" menu unless
you see the terminal symbol (icon) right next to the "Menu"
button (as seen in gordon77s post) - try clicking on it instead.

The "microsoftism" for icons next to the "start" button is called
"Quick Launch Bar".

Thanks Gordon.

That is a really clear answer (especially with the cropped screen print which looks exactly like mine).

I now understand and can hopefully progress.

What i am trying to tell you, is that you make it yourself, by changing the "Menu" text to "Start". You can change the color, the icon, and you can change the text.

Looks cool? Customized Desktop UI? Different from all the other Rasbian pi's? Fun? Artistic?

I don't see the point. I switch and rewrite cards so often I usually forget to turn off overscan, let alone invest time in that. NOOBS is actually a good tool for a testing OS to start from scratch. I always forget what's on a SD card. If I don't remember what's on it, then it's not worth finding out. I keep everything important on my desktop or Github. Isn't that the point? Besides, who needs customization when you have the terminal.

To each his own. Some like to customize their desktop UI, some do not. I happen to be one of those that like to ;)

If you want the login screen....
Uncheck AUTO LOGIN "login as User Pi" in Raspberry Pi Config. Set/change password under System tab

If you want to change the login screen:

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf
default username: pi
default password: raspberry
