Installing wifi dongles.

Sun Aug 12, 2012 1:44 pm

I recently purchased a wifi dongle ( the 7dayshop mini WIFI wireless N 150Mbps) and am having problems installing it. Is there any problems that you are having with related to installing wifi dongles. I tried looking up walk through videos but none matched for what i was looking for and some of the internet explanations are a bit to complex for me to understand.

I already have the data from the start up disc that came with the package and but it on a memory pen and saved it on the raspberry pi and tried opening it but all the programs come up blank.

Help/tips/advice would be greatly appreciated

You mean this one here?

The link to the firmware download suggests the chip inside this is an RTL8188CUS; there's a long thread on getting those to work here.

Best of luck :)

Well, the wifi setup is not really easy on linux. Perhaps a better a idea is to buy a new dongle from the supported list ( with a RTL8188CUS chipset for instance). For the RTL8188CUS there is an automated script to use it.

You can try this with your current dongle: in a terminal type 'lsusb' (without the ''), you get something like this below:
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8176 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN Adapter

Than you should google with this for support.
