What do I need to setup a PPT presentation with Raspberry Pi

Mon Mar 14, 2016 3:11 pm

Hi guys,

I am trying to learn how to setup a Powerpoint presentation using Raspberry pi.

This is my plan: Buying a raspberry pi 2 model B and connect it to a big touch screen monitor. Then transfer my powerpoint slides from windows to raspberry.

Now here comes the hard part: what do I need other than the Raspberry pie?
Here is my assumption list:
1. A mouse
2. A touchscreen
3. A keyboard
4. A SD card? I saw this from other post since someone said you can put PPT file in a SD card and reopen it in Raspberry using "Libre office". Is it actually that easy to do?
5. A power cable? Does the Raspberry pie come with the power cable?

I am super new to raspberry, but please help as I am so interested in buying and trying it.

Thank you so much, guys.

Ok, I just saw the sticky post and some of my questions are answered :D :D :D

However, my key question remains as I have no idea how hard to open PPT slides in Raspberry using a SD card. How do you put ppt files on a computer into a SD card on the first step? I know most SD cards are used on cameras...

1. A mouse
Pretty much any USB mouse will work.
2. A touchscreen
Make sure it is one that is supported on the Pi
3. A keyboard
Again, any USB keyboard will work. The cheap basic keyboards tend to work better than more expensive ones. I sometimes use a Bluetooth keyboard with a Bluetooth USB adaptor.
4. A SD card? I saw this from other post since someone said you can put PPT file in a SD card and reopen it in Raspberry using "Libre office". Is it actually that easy to do?
You need a micro SD card to store the Operating System and Applications on the Pi (8GB Minimum is recommended). You could put the presentations on that as well, but it might be easier to use a separate USB stick, or set up the Pi so the data can be shared over a network. Libre Office will do the same job as Powerpoint.
You can get USB adaptors to plug the card into your PC.
5. A power cable? Does the Raspberry pie come with the power cable?
The Pi doesn't come with a power cable or power supply unless you buy a kit with those (and probably the micro SD card) included. Make sure you get a good power supply and a good cable too. Cheap ones just can't provide enough power (despite what they say on the label).

Feel free to ask more questions :)

Raspbian includes Libre Office suit that should open a ppt file.

From the X desktop go to Menu...Office...Libre office Impress, or just use file manager to browse to the file and double-click on it to launch it in Impress.

There are many ways to get a file onto the Pi:

a. Copy it onto the Pi SD card mounted as a disk under Widows. On the Pi it should show up in /boot
b. Copy it to a USB memory stick (possibly the easiest option for occasional use by a novice.)
c. Copy it to a second SD card and mount that in a USB-SD card reader on the Pi. It should show up in /media/
d. Upload it to cloud storage and download it via the web interface.
e. use scp or ftp to transfer the file directly to the Pi.
f. Set-up a Samba share on the Pi and save the file to it from Windows
g. Set-up a share on Windows and connect to it from Pi.

f. Save the file in a shared Windows folder

Rpdom, thank you so much for your quick reply! Can I please add you as a friend? Or it will be also convenient if you allow me to add you on facebookXDD. If its not convenient for you, I can definitely ask you on forum. It's just that I really need a mentor to start this as I am completely dumb..

This is funny. I did just this not that long ago. It's cool to do a presentation and show that the Pi is awesome. Libre Office has a power point like application that works great with most PPT files. Just avoid animated slides and large images. They slow down the load time. I used an original Pi B, and it worked like a champ...

Too bad it choked (Original Pi USB power issue that causes a reboot) when I switched to my robot to demo the code used in it. That caused the main Pi I was using to have to reload which took too long. Loading Libre and a PPT takes a little while. Pi 2 would be much faster, but still takes a little bit.
Maybe I should have just run the PPT from the robot. ;-)

You're better off asking here because there is a huge number of people with good Pi experience who will be happy to help you :-)

I try to avoid using my facebook account as much as possible. It's mostly for family and friends that I have actually met or worked with.

I know this is a year later, but does anyone know how to control the slides with the touch screen?? Does not seem to work. It makes me use the arrow keys, but I would like to just avoid that and simply click or swipe on the screen to switch slides. Thanks!! I am also creating a presentation on my Pi 3, but want the viewers to interact with it.
