How are you going to interface withe the washing m/c settings
Don't do either of those and have no interest in doing so
How are you going to control your heating settings
I use an eq3 MAX
http://www.eq-3.de/ system of battery powered radio linked rad-valves, boiler and pump are controlled using above mentioned Homematic devices.
You don't want garage doors opening and closing at random due to a cliche in a poorly designed programme, that's not designed Fail to Safe.
fhem
http://fhem.de is a pretty mature system, all open source, you can check and modify any code should you wish.
All the above will have to send feed back to the Pi , so the Pi knows that the instruction have been carried out.
Indeed, and Homematic, amongst many others, provide that feedback.
When it comes answering mains questions , I will NOT tell them what to do I will only tell them what NOT to do . Leave the mains side alone unless you what you are doing
Very good advice and those not competent should always instruct an electrician to connect any device to mains wiring.
