I'm new to this and hope someone can help me.

I want to use the raspberry pi for home automation and control it with an android device. What will be the best way to do this. Will it also be possible to use the pi as a media center at the same time?

So use wireless devices
I use fhem (http://fhem.de) here. Other than a few 1-wire sensors none of my devices are connected directly

Realy How have you interfaced between the receiver and the mains voltage domestic appliance to control it

A mixture of Homematic devices http://www.elv.de/homematic-hausautomat ... -home.html with a Homematic USB adapter and some HomeEasy socket adapters http://www.homeeasy.eu/ with an RFTRX http://www.rfxcom.com/

Edit: and some panStamps http://panstamp.com but I have no actuators on these at present, just sensors

How are you going to interface withe the washing m/c settings
How are you going to control your heating settings
You don't want garage doors opening and closing at random due to
a cliche in a poorly designed programme, that's not designed Fail to Safe.
All the above will have to send feed back to the Pi , so the Pi knows
that the instruction have been carried out.

When it comes answering mains questions , I will NOT tell them what to do
I will only tell them what NOT to do . Leave the mains side alone unless you

Don't do either of those and have no interest in doing so

I use an eq3 MAX http://www.eq-3.de/ system of battery powered radio linked rad-valves, boiler and pump are controlled using above mentioned Homematic devices.

fhem http://fhem.de is a pretty mature system, all open source, you can check and modify any code should you wish.

Indeed, and Homematic, amongst many others, provide that feedback.

Very good advice and those not competent should always instruct an electrician to connect any device to mains wiring.
