What software on what platform? A performance issue.

Fri Jan 22, 2016 7:42 pm

Hi,

So I've got some crazy ideas but I'm really not sure if it would be viable or the best set up possible. My question will be, as I'm not confident at all about what I'm trying to do; Do you see any flaw? Do you have any advice? I'll have to read a ton of documentation, so if you think you can spare me some time :-D.

First here are the software’s and systems I'd like to use :
  1. Git server
  2. Git client
  3. HTPC client (plex/kodi?)
  4. HTPC server (plex)
  5. Torrent daemon (Deluge?)
  6. Torrent client
  7. Samba server(or another file sharing solution?)
  8. Samba client
  9. Back up
It may be a lots of things for a RPI but I will barely use more than one at a time. I mean, only the things I'm interacting with should busy the processor. Oh, and the torrent daemon would only run when I'm not there or sleeping.

My equipment list :
  • Raspberry Pi B rev 2
  • Raspberry Pi 2
  • Laptop
  • External hard drive
  • modem/router
  • TV screen + audio

Thanks for you help,

Looks alright. Everything is feasible.

Hi again,

I'm reading lots of documentation but I don't get a clear answer of what I should install on my RPI's.
For the client, it is straightforward : rasplex from the official site. Which is both the O.S. and the plex client (an overlay over OpenElec and one other over Kodi, as far as I understand).
But for the server side... Do I have to build it on a casual raspbian? Doesn't plex offer some official port on RPI?
I read there might be some difficulty about transcoding... I don't understand what exactly it does, or more precisely, why does it do it. Should a fear some video quality loss or subtitle compatibility with my client?

Thanks

You could certainly put everything on a single Raspbian installed, only you can see how well it works for your purpose.

You could also just switch out SD cards.
