Fri Jan 22, 2016 2:46 pm

I am developing a new project using raspberry pi which will be controlled through the internet. I have come to face some problems.
Is a USB Raspberry Pi wifi dongle is mandatory for connecting wifi? Can i use non Rberry wifi adapter?
please help me to get through this... Thanks :)

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Yes of course -as long as drivers are available for the dongle - which one did you have in mind?

I have a D-Link DWA 125, which works out of the box, and does not require a powered hub. I also have a DWA 160, which require driver to be loaded, and only works reliably when plugged into a powered USB hub. So depending on which D-Link device you migh, and which version, versiont work.

Also have a TP-Link WN725 which needs a driver loaded, which is dependant on the the kernel version in use, that is, if you update the kernel, you need to update the driver to suit. It also works with out the need of a powered USB hub.

So you mileage might vary ...

The B, B+ and 2B models have ethernet on the board.
None of the Raspberries have WiFi, so ALL models need a dongle.

Most USB dongles work with the standard kernel with nothing else needed, plug-in stoke up the GUI, enter SSID/psk and go. Some dongles need special drivers. There's the wonderful driver building service that Mr Engman provides on the forum and on his Dropbox account where he build the special drivers for every kernel.
