Catchup TV

Thu Aug 02, 2012 9:22 am

Not had too much time to play with my Pi due to Olympics in UK.

I was initially hoping to use it as a catchup tv device for my Sony TV but not flash is not supported, I assume then that this is not an option for this device yet ;)

So how does that work then, I assume HTML5 is, or will be built in to browsers but if the content states it requires a flash media player to work then I assume it still cannot be played.

Annoyingly BBC programs in UK can be downloaded using the Linux program get_iplayer but it seems the other popular UK channels cannot be easily downloaded.

There is a TVCatchup plugin for XBMC, so you can use TVCatchup on OpenElec or RaspBMC. It's a but slow and cumbersome to navigate on the RPi, but once a stream is started it is OK.

There are also addons for XBMC covering the BBC, ITV, Ch 4, and Five, groups of stations.

All work fine using any of the Raspberry XMBC softwares easily found on this forum.

I will, once the Olympics ends I'll have more time to experiment.

What puzzles me is why is flash not supported, where is the hurdle? Linux is not the problem, browsers don't appear to be the problem, most mobile phones are ARM powered and can play flash so what prevents it being an option.

Adobe has stopped developing flash
flash on arm was always poor
flash is also evil [well my experience anyway]
