A Breadboard is a must for learning electronics , if you want to do hardware projects
to be controlled by the Pi, understanding electronics will give you more Idea of how a Pi
works , and how to interface with the Pi inputs,

What you will need.

1. Breadboard
2, Jumper wires.
3. Sample components LEDs / Resistors / ,,,,,,,,,,
4. 0 / 12v / 3 or 4amp power supply With protection.
5, Digital multi meter.
6. Book on simple starter circuits and Ohms Law..

Don't use the Pi power for the breadboard, until you know what you are doing

Thanks, but for starters I'll just be sticking to software (mostly software based if not completely) I guess!

I have M-M and F-M (I have 40 of each. I think you would soon be short with just 10)

I pick up a lot of stuff from ebay. It is very inexpensive and most of it ships from china. It takes a couple weeks to get to me (US).

You can make your own jumper wires from a roll of solid core insulated wire, small guage, when I was into basic stamps that's the way we used to do it.

Here is a economical breakout board and a small variety that is cheap:

I have quite a lot of old solid-core cat-5 cable and telephone cable that I cut up for jumper cables when I need them.
