Leaving PiCam/Motion sensor plugged in when swapping distros

Mon Jan 04, 2016 4:43 pm

I only have one raspberry pi and I'd like to leave my PiCamera/motion sensor plugged in to it permanently because it's a burden to constantly connect and disconnect the things especially when it's enclosed in a case.

Although I also use this RPi with OSMC as a media server, where I watch movies off an external HDD which I power through the Pi by setting max_usb_current=1. So I have to be concerned about power draw (my Pi is connected to a 5v 2A supply).

Is it alright to leave the motion sensor/Camera plugged in while using other distributions that don't use these utilities? Would I not have to worry about power draw if these things are always plugged in? Or will they not be turned on by default? The camera plugs in to the provided slot, the motion sensor plugs in to the 5v/GPIO4/Ground pins.
