Adding USB + SD Expansion Card

Mon Dec 28, 2015 3:05 am

I am a new Raspberry Pi builder and am interested in adding a USB + SD card expansion card to an upcoming project with a raspberry pi zero.

I am aware there are probably easier options but I have a bunch of these laptop expansion card on hand and would like to use them.

How hard would it be to attach and get running a card of this type? Attached is a photo.

Thanks for any possible guidance

I am not sure how that card works; it is not clear from the photo what it is or how it connects to the laptop. Can you clarify this?

Thanks for the reply.

It is connected via what looks like a mini 12 pin connector, 2 rows of 8 pins.

The part number is 86249-001 or 6050A2154201 and was pulled from an HP business class laptop. I have a lot of these cards laying around and and building multiple pi zeros that need extra usb and sd slots for storage and peripherals ect.

Very unlikely to make it work easily.

Odds are it simply breaks out 2-4 USB channels from the motherboard.

If you can trace the circuit, and figure out all he signals on the connector, it may be possible, but I strongly suspect it will need a four port hub to drive it.

This is a SD card and USB port in one expansion card and it has SMSC power chips on the expansion board itself so to say it only splits a usb signal is not correct.
