Are there any disadvantages to using Berryboot?

Wed Dec 09, 2015 1:06 am

Recently I got a new sc card and put Berryboot because I thought I would dual boot Retropi and Raspbian. However I found out you can download Emulationstation standalone so I no longer have a need for this setup.

So I have a few questions:

1: should write the image or use noobs instead of using Berryboot?

2: Are there any disadvantages to using Berryboot?

3: Will I be getting any performance gain from writing the Raspbian image directly to the sd card?

4: Should I just leave my current setup alone and not worry about it?

Thanks

If you have problems with Berryboot, you would need to go to that site for support. With NOOBS (or a direct image install), you can get help here.

The impact Berryboot has is really only on the boot process. Once the system is up and running it does not make a lot of difference. The 'easiest' way to run a multi-boot system is to switch off and change the SD card ;)

Berryboot is not the best system for people with no experience of loading and running operating systems, but does provide an easy way to create a system that boots from the SD card (as all Pis must) then runs on a USB stick or USB hard drive. Once you have used it successfully you probably know enough to keep using it.

It is your choice. Just do what you are comfortable with. Each time you switch between operating systems, whether temporary (switching cards) or permanent (writing cards), you potentially leave things you have done behind; just understand this and deal with it.

Berryboot does not suppport non-Linux systems AFAIK. Furthermore it complicates space-saving or incremental backups on Linux just like NOOBS.

• Don't like the board ? Missing features ? Change to the prosilver theme ! You can find it in your settings.
• Don't like to search the forum BEFORE posting 'cos it's useless ? Try googling : yoursearchtermshere site:raspberrypi.org
