Monitor issues

Mon Nov 23, 2015 12:46 am

Hi,
I'm new to computers and have been pretty much lost since I started done this raspberry pi road.
I have two questions:

1. I have a HP 25vx monitor. The problem is the monitor is very very bright. There are no controls on the monitor and I cant find anything on the Pi desktop to adjust it. Any suggestions? I bought a Raspberry PI Make: Getting started kit from Barnes and Noble.

2. There is a big black border about an inch thick all around the desktop. The manual said to turn on overscan but that didn't make any difference. Any suggestions?

Also, a criticism for whomever the powers at be are. I was very excited to get this but after two weeks I'm about ready to toss it on a shelf. The beginners "how to material" is pretty much terrible. I have no knowledge or experience with computers and I find the material just skips over steps or assumes a prior knowledge of computers. My two cents.

That monitor seems quite recent, so it should work with the Raspberry Pi. Having said that, there are thousands of monitors, old and new, so all we can do is assume that they conform to the known standards. I assume that you are connecting with the HDMI cable.

Does the Monitor come with a manual, or can it be downloaded (that seems "pretty much terrible" if not). Is the screen too bright when using it on another device? People here are mostly volunteers so don't expect every detail to be covered for every monitor ;)

You don't say what you have done to set up the monitor, or what you have tried to change it. You could start here: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=5851&p=77547#p77547 (a link from the "Sticky" posts at the top of this section).

You could indicate which "how to material" you did not understand. There is a fine balance between having a simple guide that assumes a lot, and a detailed guide that gets too confusing.

The Manual for that monitor is available on the HP support website. http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP- ... 46/manuals.

It appears to have front panel controls. These should bring up an on screen display menu and there should be an option to change brightness.

You actually want to disable overscan. Use the Raspberry Pi Configuration panel. It can be found in the menu, in the Preferences sub-menu.

Thanks for taking the time for my questions!

Got the screen brightness fixed working! I feel foolish, I left the protective plastic on the monitor to protect it. But when I took it off there actually are controls on the monitor. They are touch sensitive lights that light up when you swipe your finger over the black plastic. I couldn't see any physical buttons and when I touched the protective plastic it wouldn't activate the touch screen buttons. That's been about two weeks of frustration right there... I almost threw it through the window.

As far as the black border around the desktop I've turned overscan off but that didn't make any difference. Any other suggestions.

3rd issue. When I open a LXTerminal window and type sudo raspi-config it takes me to the Raspberry Pi configuration tool. This screen is cut off about 3/4 of the way across the text. Expanding the screen doesn't fix the issue it stays the same. When I select option 8. Advanced Options -> A1 Overscan-> What would you like to do with overscan-> Disable. It fixes the Raspberry Pi Software Configuration screen so I can see all of the text. It doesn't fix the black border around the desktop. Now... When I select 8. Advanced Options->A1 Overscan->Disable-> Do you want to reboot?->Yes. After it restarts the text is back to being cut of on the Raspberry Pi Configuration Tool.

I bought a Make: Raspberry Pi Getting started kit from Barnes and Noble. I don't know if that helps or makes a difference. It's a raspberry Pi 2

I appreciate you all taking the time to help me.

In the LxTerminal could you run the following commands and report the output?

Code: Select all

tvservice -s
fbset

Return to “Beginners”
