Just getting started. B 2 model to use for music streaming

Sun Nov 08, 2015 6:00 pm

I bought a B 2 model to use for music streaming. Trying to get it set up but I am a total newb. I have created a burned sd card using a brand new card and Moode audio. I powered the unit with a usb cord from a laptop and connected to a monitor. The lights on the board are flashing but there is no image or anything showing on the monitor. I have it connected using hdmi to dvi cable.

I have spent a fair bit of time trying to learn for myself how to get it all working but I am clearly missing something.
Any help would be great.

Start with this: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=58151

It may be that your laptop actually adheres to the USB 2.0 standard and will not supply more than 500mA to an attached device (the Pi in this case). Indeed, unless there is a proper "handshake", it may not provide any more that 100mA. Best to get a good 5v 2A power supply for your Pi. If you specify where you are, people can give you somewhat localized sources for add on equipment (like PSUs) that you might need.

Today i tried the power supply direct from the wall rather than through laptop. The lights come on but they dont blink.I thought i had read if the light doesnt flash it is because it is unable to read the card.I formatted the card and re wrote the noob file to it but still no luck.In the meantime i,m still reading and trying to learn.

If you connect a passive converter from hdmi to the digital in of some monitors, it might not work. I know I couldn't get one of two monitors to work in that way when I tried it back when the original pi first came out.

If you run a program on another box like fping or fing on an android phone, you might find that your pi is booted up but just not showing anything on the display. It would be good to narrow down where your problem actually is.

What are you putting on the SDCard? Start with a copy of NOOBS/Raspbian Jessie and get that working before trying anything else.

Thanks for they tips. I did finally get it working somewhat. The noob os did not down load fully onto the card for some reason. I formatted and re loaded it and this time all the needed files seemed to be there.I got it to the point of booting and it said there was something else it needed but it required an ethernet connection so I left it as is. I will hook it up to my router today and try it again, hopefully it will work ok this time.

Well now i,m really baffled. I suspected there was something going on with the sd card since the green light was no longer blinking.I started over with a different card. Formatted and re loaded noob. When i hooked it up the screen came up with the choices of programs to install but before I had the chance I got a black screen that said there was some sort of crash.

It sounds to me like you have a bad power supply. Make sure it is at least 5V @ 1.5A.

Ok I did try another power supply. In every case it seems the red light is on showing it has power but I am no longer able to get any activity with the green light at all. Does this indicate a problem with the cards socket.?

Reformat & rewrite the card with a fresh copy of NOOBS/Raspbian or NOOBS Lite and try again.

Ok i took your advice. I started with a totally new download of noob.Even a different version. Formatted my disc and re loaded it. I now get a solid green light but no flashing indicating it is reading the card.I,m really stumped.

That indicates that the Pi can't even find the first "bootcode.bin" file in the root folder of the card.

What files do you see in the root of the card (D:\ or whatever in windows)?

Not exactly sure I understand what you asked. When I DD the files from the extracted zip file i start with the first which I believe says "images" and then just go down through the list to the end.I double checked that they are all transferred to the card as they appear in the extracted list.

With noobs you just unzip the contents of the downlaoded file to the card. You don't need to dd anything.
If you look at the card in any system, you should see those files and folders.

Code: Select all

Ok thanks. I will have a closer look. Is there a limit to the number of times a card can be formatted? Mine has been done a few times now.

You will eventually wear it out, but it will take a long time. A full format should only write to each block once or twice, and they are designed to handle many thousands of write cycles each.

Ok thanks. I seem to be making some progress. I got it to start the boot up and it got to the point where I had to select the OS I wanted to install. But when I try to choose one it says there is zero room left on the disc which is odd because it was an 8gb disc.I have a 16 that I am re formatting and will try again. I am only able to do an over write format. It will not allow me to do a full erase. Not sure if that is a problem or not.
