I am not sure what happened to your system. What you appear to be seeing is the contents of the SETTINGS partition that is created by NOOBS. This is mounted when starting the Pi at "/media/SETTINGS" and contains files lost+found, noobs.conf and installed_os.json. Usually there is no need to use these files. I am not sure what is giving you the error message.

When you say "On the desktop" do you mean 'the desktop' (that also shows the Pi logo) or do you mean the File Manager? If it is the File Manager there will be a menu bar showing 'File', 'Edit', 'View', etc. If it is the Desktop you will only see the Task bar showing the Menu button, a 2 drawer filing cabinet icon (the File Manager launcher), a TV icon (the LXTerminal launcher) and probably a few others depending on if you have changed what is displayed, and depending on which version of Raspbian you have installed.

If it is the File Manager, you may have hidden the left panel, or "Side Pane". This can be restored using 'View' and 'Side Pane' from the menus. If you choose 'Places' using that menu, you should see 'SETTINGS' listed in the left panel, and if you then click on 'Home Folder' you should see your files.

I hope this helps.
