high power usage

Sun Nov 01, 2015 5:34 pm

Hey

I want to use a 16x relay board on my raspberry pi 2 B.
i have a 2.5A power supply.

The board is using 1A when all relays are on.

i am a little bit afraid to power them through a 5V GPIO pin.
do i need to have a separate power supply for this board?

Regards
Mark

That should be OK as long as your power supply and microUSB cable are good enough.

I did that using an MCP32017 running at 5V0 as the GPIO controller for 16 5V0 coil relays.

When everything is up and running measure the voltage across RPi board pins #4 (5V) and #6 (GND) with all the relays "on". If that voltage is in range your PS and power cable are adequate.
