Simple rule: DON'T.

More complex reasons:
1. You'll not believe the amount of SPAM you have to field and the bandwidth it costs to do that
2. You'll risk getting blacklisted by your ISP and lots of other sites around the world. Get your ISP blacklisted and they won't be happy
3. You need strong security and control if port 25 is open to the public internet
4. Running your email on your ISP's server or using a webmail service like GMail or Yahoo or Hotmail is easier they pay the cost of strong control and spam filtering
5. The risk of becoming a spam spewing zombie machine is extremely high, even though you're running an obscure operating system on an obscure hardware platform, the bad folks will find your Raspberry and will try to break in
6. You may be in violation of your ISP's acceptable use policy (AUP)
Note: Any requirement to use a crystal ball or mind reading will result in me ignoring your question.

Never heard of that, but I have zero desire to run a mail server.

Mr Google and his colleagues do such a sterling effort of looking after (for free) and scanning/reading/building a search engine/and being sneaky (the payback) from my email I don't need to do that.
