SD card problems

Thu Sep 03, 2015 9:39 pm

Hi,

I have been through two SD cards with the Raspberry Pi 1 Model B. The first SD card did not work whatsoever and the second one worked the first time but did not get past the rainbow screen. Naturally, I googled the reason and solution, I found that there is something wrong with the software (which I downloaded from raspberrypi.org) so I formatted the SD card and transferred the software on it. This time the ACT LED did not turn on and I did not get to see the rainbow screen. I have formatted and put the new software on the SD card at least five times now, and still no luck. I have also checked on the Wikipedia page to see if my SD cards are compatible and it says both of them are. At this point I am very frustrated and desperately require help. Am I doing something wrong? What do you guys think I should do?

Thanks, Salman

? how we know ?
- the title is "SD card problems", do you know that the old board ( and power supply ) is ok? does it run with a "good" SD card?
- can you just give detail info about the cards
- what format command you use?
- what OS you downloaded?
- how you bring / transfer the OS to the SD card?

I think you should carefully read, and if necessary re-read, the advice given here: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=58151

Summary: SD card, Power, Display - get all 3 right and it will boot correctly.

I know the SD card and power supply is good. I downloaded NOOBS and dragged and dropped into the SD card on my computer.

Did you unzip the contents of the downloaded file?

Yes, I tried putting the zipped file, the unzipped file and both at the same time in the SD card

You should put the contents (files and folders) of the unzipped downloaded NOOBS file on the formatted card.

Yeah, every time I put software on it again I used the formatting tool to format it

even you still not try to give precise info,
i try a guess:
- you got a RPI1B and original ( but possibly also old) Noobs SD card from a kit
+ you formatted the SD ?with SDFormatter ( format adjustment ON )?
+ you download, unzip and copy files and dirs from noobs v1.4.1
+ you connect HDMI monitor, and USB -keyboard -mouse and a "good" power supply
- - but RPI still not boot!

i think you not insert the SD card fully ( but that is one of hundred possible causes )

The farthest I've gotten is to the rainbow screen so the SD card inserting is fine. I download the OS and format the SD card on Mac, you think that could be a reason? What is format adjustment? When I format the card I do the full format.

Try using a different SD card. Some just don't work with the Pi. You could also try and download Pi Baker, and download the Raspbian raw image, and use Pi Baker to write that to the card. That may work.
