upgrade with new linux

Sat Aug 29, 2015 4:07 am

last week i see a lot of posts about
beginner not should do rpi-update and copy of that "bleeding edge" statements in a insulting way.

today i setup new system and the UPGRADE ( >200MB ) give a me change from
Raspbian Release date: 2015-05-05
DEBIAN wheezy Linux version 3.18.11-v7
after reboot
DEBIAN wheezy Linux version 4.1.6-v7

something in the information stream here is wrong!
where is the news info that we should do a upgrade now ( or not do it??)
-- if the info is NOT here on this site it is bad style
-- even if it is here it is still last millennium style,
i expect, when i start the RPI a info pops up:
" new upgrade available incl. linux 4..."

or if the experts know about this, why not say , pls do not do rpi-update, wait one week and then do apt-get upgrade.

General advice is: Only do rpi-update if advised to because of a specific problem. You should generally use apt-get update and apt-get upgrade to get the latest stable software.

rpi-update will pull in the latest (so-called "bleeding-edge") versions of the kernel and bootloader. These versions may fix some problems or may not. They may also introduce new problems. Once those updates have been tested and found to be safe to install, they will become available via apt-get.

If you use apt-get to upgrade now you will get Linux kernel 4.1.6+ or 4.1.6-v7+

You should run apt-get update/upgrade at least once a week. Most updates are security fixes, but sometimes we get a new firmware and kernel. You'll discover it yourself, if you run the update often enough.

The new kernel releases (4.0 and then 4.1) have been discussed here in long threads and it has been announced there, that they will be pushed to the repository as soon as they are considered stable.
That's what happened a few days ago.

Optional fullscreen kiosk mode and command interface for embedded applications
Includes omxplayerGUI, an X front end for omxplayer

It's only required, when a "new distribution" (or what the Foundation thinks it is) is available (next one should be the Jessie upgrade).

This may break things so you should really update your data before you do it.

You'll discover if dist-upgrade is needed, when a number of packages are held back.

Kodi-15.1 users should not run dist-upgrade, because it will replace kodi-15.1 by Kodi 14.2 (the version numbering of Kodi in the repository is somehow mangled).

i know you are right! but that is what i hear at this forum:
yesterday a linux 4.1.5 via a RPI-UPDATE was the "bleeding edge" nobody needs, esp. not a beginner.
today the linux 4.1.6 i should have already, if i would care to do the UPGRADE more often.

don't you hear it too?
