Keeping power plugged in while off

Wed Jul 22, 2015 12:22 pm

Hey guys I had a thought and wanted to see if it was safe for the Pi's or not. I have a few Pi's and they have two holes labeled "Run" near the display port. from what I've read that basically restarts the Pi.

What I was wondering is if it was safe for the Pi to shut down, keep the power plugged in, and when i want to turn it back up short those two pins by soldering in a button. It may be a trivial question but I wasn't sure if leaving power on the Pi was safe while it was powered off or if it could potentially cause any damage.

Thanks! :)

Yes. You can do that.

It won't hurt your Pi to leave power connected after it has shut down.

While those pins are connected the Pi will be reset and wait. When you release them it will start running. It's really a "Don't Run" connection ;)

You can also briefly connect pin 5 on P1 (the GPIO connector) to any ground pin (like pin 6) to wake the Pi from the Shutdown state.
