set up Pi using laptop

I want to set up my Pi, but don't have a working computer monitor or a TV i can use.
Could I use set up and use it through my laptop?

With plain Raspbian it's relatively easy. With NOOBS you have to mess about setting it up for a silent install.

+1 forget NOOBS use Raspbian standalone as SSH is enabled by default
