Greetings I am looking to use my pi to FTTP movies from my laptop to the pi connected to my TV. I am using Rasbian at the moment and have VNC working but am in need of a good media player that rides on top of Rasbian.

Or... does XBMC allow me to install a usb drive and fttp movies to it?

Any Kodi/XBMC distro should support SFTP ( thats what you meant with FTTP ?).

Another option (for use on Raspbian) might be omxplayerGUI from the "Minimal Kiosk Browser" package :
