"Wifi Config" icon disappeared

Using Raspbian Wheezy. It was on a SD card included with purchase. Install successful.
There was originally a "Wifi Config" icon in one of the categories accessed by drop down menu on upper left (may have been under "Accessories" category but I don't remember). When I selected the icon a screen would come up to allow selection of configuration parameters such as encryption method. The icon is gone.
The icon is shown here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruits-ra ... up/setting
-up-wifi-with-raspbian

Any ideas on how to recover the "Wifi Config" icon?

Thanks. I see the changes described inn the link, but I don't understand how my system changed without any know command issued.
I now have a new icon on the upper panel for "Wifi networks (dhcpcdui) Settings" but the icon for wpa_gui (the Wifi Config icon) has disappeared from the drop down menu/preferences. What caused the change?

I don't know what changes have been made because I haven't tried the new UI/net mods.

Do you still have wpa_gui on your system?

Code: Select all

ls /usr/sbin | grep wpa
wpa_gui
Perhaps the wpa_gui.desktop file has changed. Perhaps it is now hidden from the menu?

Code: Select all

cat /usr/share/applications/wpa_gui.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=wpa_gui
Comment=Graphical user interface for wpa_supplicant
Exec=/usr/sbin/wpa_gui
Icon=wpa_gui
GenericName=wpa_supplicant user interface
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Qt;Network;
Keywords=wlan;wifi;configuration;
Perhaps your Pi has some file system corruption.

Perhaps the menu cache is corrupted.

Yes to your question... I still have wpa_gui, but it does not have an icon in the drop down menu.preferences. I discovered if I type "wpa_gui" in a command window, the wpa_gui window comes up as before. I'm a beginner and don't understand what the code above does.

Now I have this new icon but when the cursor is over there shows the message "dhcpcd not running"
I try clic, doble clic and clic with secondary buttom to select "Wifi Networks (dhcpcdui settings), but nothing hapends.

The wifi networks is running but I can't reconfigure with this icon.

I try also run

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/dhcpcd restart
But I get

Code: Select all

[FAIL] Not running dhcpcd because /etc/network/interfaces ... failed!
[FAIL] defines some interfaces that will use a DHCP client ... failed!

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. I could not find or run wpa_gui. I ended up reloading from a backup.

I solved the problem editing /etc/network/interfaces and commenting all lines with dhcp

The solution used by cpcbegin also worked for me. Before using this solution, I saw on the boot screen a message that said "Not running dhcpcd because /etc/network/interfaces defines some interfaces that will use a DHCP client". After commenting two lines in /etc/network/interfaces that contained "dhcp" and rebooting, dhcpcd started automatically.
