I am thinking about buying a "Raspberry kit".

I am thinking about buying a "Raspberry kit".
My first project will be to have the Raspberry as a media player with USB to a hard drive and HDMI to the TV.
What do I need for this first instalment?
I have a blue tooth keyboard and mouse, I have the cables.
I guess I need,
the card (witch model?)
SD-card (how big?)
Card holder?

I am using Ubuntu in my PCs is that making it harder or easier?

1) get the raspberry pi 2
2) 8 GB size would be ideal.
3) you're going to need a power supply. 5V 2A is the best.

Ubuntu will make the process much easier than Windows.

Type of SD-card doesn't really matter, but look out for fakes, buy from a reliable supplier.

don't start with extreme card sizes on your first try, for example special measures are needed when using 64GB cards.

most micro-SD-cards come with a card holder, so you can program the card in a programmer meant for regular size cards.

the card connector on a PI is very small, so fragile so handle with care. it's a push to insert - push to release card connector, so don't try to pull out the card, or you may damage the card connectors locking mechanism.

6 volts is too much and 300mA is not enough. It has to be a 5V supply.

It should just pop up. Try formatting it again with GParted if that sees it.

Many people do, but the quality of the output is important.

a standard USB phone "charger" normally outputs 5v but the amps rating will vary quite widely, the cheaper versions won't manage to reliably output the correct voltage at higher current flows. a decent tablet USB "charger" or a high end smartphone "charger" should be fine.

I keep saying "charger" as a charger doesn't have to meet the same specification for power supply as a USB power supply has to meet.

You can always try out a charger if you are unsure. If there is a rainbow box in the top corner or the red power light is off, then its no good.

I have had some problems with installing!
First I installed RasEX on a 8GB card but as it don't seem to be the best for watching movies I tried to install Noobs and it went as well as it can but only on my 4GB card and that seems a little small for Noobs.
I tried to do the same way on my 8GB card but it just wont start up.
Can it be something with the rights?
I am using Ubuntu on my PCs.
