pi 2 can hdmi to vga adapter destroy hdmi device?

Sun Mar 22, 2015 2:17 pm

A youtube comment about connecting hdmi to a vga display said, that it may destroy the pi's hdmi. It was something about the hdmi voltage not being able to deal with a vga display. Is that correct?

On my pi 2 I can connect hdmi to vga display if I use a hdmi to dvi d dual link adapter and a dvi d dual link to vga adapter.
Will doing it destroy the pi 2's hdmi?

Thank you.

I believe the YT video is misleading..

The RPi B+ and RP2 B can use an unpowered HDMi to VGA Adaptor with no issue.

On the earlier RPi B some unpowered HDMi to VGA Adaptors drew to much power and will not function.

In both scenarios it will not destroy the RPi as the electrical circuit is protected.

The use of some HDMI to VGA converters could permanently damage a diode in the early model RPis. AFAIK this is not an issue with the + and 2 versions of RPi.
