OMX Problems

Sat Feb 28, 2015 7:32 am

I posted a similar topic last year. At that time, the on-screen features of OMXplayer weren't working, for some reason. Eventually, an upgrade was available that restored them and improved the performance a bit.

I upgrade via sudo apt-get update/upgrade (or: update/dist-upgrade) usually about monthly. Last week, I noticed that there was an OMXplayer update in the new distro. Now, it freezes about 20-50 minutes into feature-length media playbacks. This is unusable, for me!

Is there a was to "back out" a newer unsatisfactory version? I have studied the docs extensively and can't figure it out.

Is the OMX team aware of problems with the current release? Is it possible that it's not compatible with my "firmware" (is that the s/w in my SD card or my PC chip?). Need "guru" 2 quickly weigh in here--thanx!!!

I eventually discovered that, since the upgrade I mentioned in my original post, OMX was acting on the "-r" option in my play script and re-negotiating with the HDMI display device to send 1080P video. This proves 2B a bit much 4 the 'Pi and OMX has serious motion artifacts and, at some point, freezes up. Removing the option solves the problem. Also, I noticed in the current MAN page that there's a "-z" option that does the opposite; I haven't tried that one yet.

It's possible 2 control the HDMI output resolution; see the discussion on: http://elinux.org/RPiconfig

I'm closing this topic and hope that the info here can be helpful.
