Install question

Tue Jul 03, 2012 4:33 pm

I am a little confused on package install. I am using the debian6-19-04-2012 image for raspberry pi and I want to install a package, but I can not get into root (su root) as it asks me for a password and (raspberry) does not work.

The description says, " It’s a reference root filesystem..." does this mean that it is already in root mode?

I am completely new to linux and it seems that it is going to be the largest hump I have to get over.

in debian systems to get into root you use the command sudo

So to install something I would type

sudo apt-get install samba-common

If you want to elevate the entire session to root you can type

sudo bash

which will run everything as root until you type

exit

which will return you to your basic user privileges.

For Debian Wheezy it's user: root and password: root

Return to “Beginners”
