Need advice on Displays

Mon Jun 21, 2021 4:34 pm

So I drive for Lyft & Uber.

I would like to put a 7" display on my front windshield and my back window for the sole purpose of showing my current status.

Something like this: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1933

It would probably have to backlit to see through my windshield?

I want to use some macro keys (?) to change the graphic on the screen to read either Lyft (pink), Uber (blue), My name as I am pulling up to my fare, and whether or not I am currently in service.

Is a raspberry pi over kill for this?

Is there any way to use the display in the rear window wirelessly?

before most of us would answer...

is it legal to "clutter" your vehicle's windshield with such displays?
will it not get you into trouble with the traffic enforcers or police?

I do not know. Lyft provides something called AMP that sits on your dash in the middle of your windshield.

I was thinking of a display close to that size would be okay.

just my opinion...

a 7" display with back light will really look impressive on very low light and specially at night time...
on clear sunny days... it may not be very visible from a distance...(unless pulling over under a shade)

doable....if one wills it.... yes indeed it might....

for front and rear display... maybe a RPi 4 with dual screen 7" screen (an off-the-shelf 7" IPS HDMI monitor, gutted and placed in a custom frame)
display changes based on buttons placed at the back of the front windshield display (connected to HDMI0)
the rear display connected connected to HDMI1, via long HDMI cable....
python program to display the required logo on the screen....
read only microSD....

if dual display is possible in RPi Pico....it will be more "robust"... but yet to find a matching display for your purpose.... :(

It won't be possible to control this LCD wirelessly from Pi but what you can do is attach the Raspberry Pi with LCD and then control it wirelessly over WiFi. Changing screen etc.

Just don't do that while actually driving... To many distracted drivers as it is.

Depends where you are.
In Australia for example, it's illegal to hang air fresheners from your rear view mirror in 5 states, "not advised" in one and legal in one.

As far as I'm aware though, it's universally illegal to have a monitor or other display device facing your window as it is classed as a distraction to other motorists.
