Recommended SD card size for a file and Plex server?

Fri Nov 08, 2019 9:47 pm

Forgive me if this answer is posted somewhere else, but I couldn't find it from searching.

I've decided to turn a a Raspberry Pi 4 (4gb model) into a low-power file and Plex server (will not be transcoding). I'll be attaching a couple of "old" hard drives to it via USB for the file storage. I still need to buy a microSD card though and was trying to figure out what size to go for.

Anyone have some recommendations for me? I know the OS is pretty small (I run it headless as well), though I'm concerned about where application databases are stored and run from (I'm assuming the SD card).

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

A 32GB or 64GB microsSD will be fine. But for "application databases" - not sure what they are - some databases are 1000's of Terabytes in size - you probably will not have any of those.

I'm mostly thinking about whatever Plex builds up data-wise. My library is pretty small though, and the rest of what I'll be storing is just backups of documents and photos.

If you have a lot of movies etc. then you could also attach a separate hard disk or solid state disk to the pi for storage.
