Pi Zero funky usb wireless keyboards?

Fri Oct 06, 2017 10:20 pm

I got my zeroW the other day put noobs on a spare SD card usb everything works except the wireless keyboard/mouse dongle isn't working :S

I tested the keyboard in several over devices inducing the pi3 and it works fine. was starting to worry could my board / port have come doa but I got around to testing 2 different wired usb keyboards and they work perfectly fine!

I had people telling me "you can plug ANY gamepad into a pi and it will just work" but I never expected it would have issues with something like a keyboard/mouse, is the Zero funny with certain usb hardware? that the case id really wish I had known before ordering .

TLDR my keyboard is the "PKB-1720 Mecer Wireless Mini Keyboard" I have tested the PizeroW with both my original 1amp psu and the official Pi3 power supply to the same results. it works fine with a logitech usb wave thingy keyboard and a belkin keyboard mouse combo thing but I kind of need it wireless.

is there anything I can do to troubleshoot and get it working or do I pretty much have to get a new keyboard? is there any indicator of which keyboards will work or not?

Does it show up when using

Code: Select all

lsusb
Plug in the dongle *after* booting the Pi and then check the log with

Code: Select all

dmesg

not sure why it says disconnect but to me it looks like it should be working? any ideas ? should I be able to probe the devices somehow and see if they are working ?

edit:I tried to "cat platform-20980000.usb-usb-0\:1\:1.0-event-kbd" pressing the keys does nothing
Thanks

Output looks fine to me.
Can't see a reason why it's not working.

Re disconnected: did you unplug and then plug in the dongle while the Pi was running?
That would explain why log says it was disconnected first.

yeah I did some unplgging if I recall mostly just unplugged the wavetech wired keyboard and plugged in the wireless dongle.

I tried to "cat platform-20980000.usb-usb-0\:1\:1.0-event-kbd" pressing the keys does nothing (it should right?)

almost like the keyboard isn't connecting to the dongle maybe? should I risk getting a new keyboard, could the Pi be faulty ?

How are you attaching the wireless keyboard dongle to the Pi Zero?

Problems with USB devices on the Pi Zero are often related to the USB-to-microUSB adapter used.

the wireless nub is plugged directly into a $2 5cm usb otg cable that was purchased for a phone that is directly plugged into the pi. I don't have another otg cable to test.

Sounds like that keyboard is not compatible. If it doesn't work on a powered hub then something is screwy. I've had good luck with the Logitech Unifying devices. I have a K400r keyboard and several different mice, and I they have worked on everything, including Raspberry Pi computers from my original model B to my Pi3 and my Zero with a tiny OTG adapter.
