Soft-float Debian wheezy, Oracle Java SE 7 and Hynix RAM

Thu Mar 21, 2013 8:33 am

I use the Soft-float Debian wheezy image (2012-08-08-wheezy-armel) to run Oracle Java SE Embedded version 7 Update 10 (7u10) on 512MB Pi boards.

Now I understand that some of the newest boards are built with Hynix RAM chips, requiring an updated image, like the latest Raspbian wheezy (2013-02-09-wheezy-raspbian), that I can't use because Java SE wouldn't work on it.

Does anyone have experience installing the old Soft-float Debian wheezy image on 512MB Pi boards with the Hynix RAM chip?

Most kernel developers are focusing on improving the new armhf Rasbian, it will give you a more stable drivers for use on your Pi and will work with the latest Hynix RAM chips. Also Oracles latest ARM JVM only work on Rasbian.

I recommend you to switch to Rasbian and try the Java SE compatible versions that are available:

I am only aware of the issue affecting RISC OS but haven't followed the issue on the soft float. I believe the warning was removed from RISC because they fixed it. Mostly it's a trial and error. If your posting in response to http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/3534 I think you can kind of read it that before returning your Pi try an official image. It will save everyone a headache. But there can be other issues with the other OS's and any hardware compatibility not just the RAM.

Provided you have at least one older Pi, you can boot the soft float image and run "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade". That will install the latest stable firmware, and the card should then work fine on Hynix boards.

Thanks for your rely,

I need to use the Oracle Java 7 SE, and that is only available on soft float, afaik. Oracle JDK 8 for ARM Early Access is indeed supporting armhf, but that is still prerelease.

I *think* you can take start.elf from the latest release and use that on the softfloat distro. Make a backup of the original in case it doesn't work!

So I've just spent a good few hours trying to boot the Soft-float Debian “wheezy” from:
http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads
so that I can run a package that doesn't work on the Hard-float Raspian image.

The image did not boot as it was downloaded. It worked only after I stole 3 files from the Raspian image:
bootcode.bin
fixup.dat
start.elf

I dumped them on the sd with the Soft-float Debian image and it booted fine.
