Hi,
I got a Raspberry Pi for Christmas and I am trying to put Java on it.
I have run the following command:
sudo apt-get install java
but it didn't work :?:
Thanks

If you are using Raspbian then try:

sudo apt-get icedtea7

To confirm whether or not Java is now working go to:

See this forum post, it includes instructions for the OpenJDK and links to instructions for Oracle JDK

If you are just starting out, I would suggest the OpenJDK to start with and later try out the Oracle JDK if you need better performance.
