Play with Hexen,Heretic on Raspberry

Thu Jan 15, 2015 3:07 pm

Hello everybody,

I've seen that it is possible to play Doom using prboom (it is already installe on the SD card image provided by Retropie project http://blog.petrockblock.com/download/r ... ect-image/).

Unfortunately, as mentioned in the post http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21923 if you want to play with similar games like Heretic or Hexen you need "raven branch" of chocolate doom (http://www.chocolate-doom.org/wiki/inde ... ven-branch).

I'm not an expert of programming in Linux etc, so is there someone out there that is able to run these games on raspberry???

P.S:
1) Dos emulators are not the best solution due to performances issues.
2) I've already have the hexen.wad and heretic.wad but is not enough :)

Many thanks!!!

Just to save you some work, from the page you linked:
Current status

raven-branch is now obsolete. Version 2.0 of Chocolate Doom integrated the changes made on raven-branch and now includes support for Heretic and Hexen.
So forget about the "Raven branch".

Casually I played Heretic on the Pi a few weeks ago.

I made a script to install crispy doom here. You must to pass the .wad file like a parameter.

Example: crispy-doom -wad /home/pi/heretic.wad

Enjoy! :D

Great!
Many Thanks!

What about the performances?
Tomorrow I'll try the script.

In your website I see also scripts for quake and wolfenstein ... what about those?? :P :P :P

The games runs flawlessly (even quake). Maybe you need to search the .wad files (the script try to download, but maybe the link is broken).

I tested the games:
The first time I execute the command "crispy-doom -wad /home/pi/heretic.wad" it works, but the second time only the sound starts and a black screen appear. If I press the buttons I heard the sounds of the menu etc...

Any idea??

Thanks!

Seems a problem with your display. Did you use hdmi, rgb? Try another TV or erase the config file.

I testet it with both HDMI and RGB.
I don't undestand why the first time it works....

another question:
I have also other .wad files like:
- Final Doom — The Plutonia Experiment
- Final Doom — TNT: Evilution
- Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel

Is it possible to play also with those??

Just try with the same method.

I tested the wad files of :
- Final Doom — The Plutonia Experiment
- Final Doom — TNT: Evilution
- Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel
and they don't work.

I still have the problem with doom, hexen and heretic... when I turn on my raspberry and try the game the first time it works.
If I exit the game and enter again only the sound and the controllers work, not the video.. a black screen appear. It seems that when I exit the game the video setting are changed.

This is the console output during the execution of the game:

Crispy Doom 1.3

I'll try to test it. What RPi model do you have?, Do you use Raspbian? Version?
