Alter the cfg file to your liking, if your using an HDMI Monitor the Default settings run Anti-alias (which is why the screen looks 'blurry') this is to negate the low resolution (well, at the time they were High Res!) and add the effect of being displayed on a CRT monitor (which gives 'Free' Anti-A). Scanlines can also be added, See Below -

# Anti-alias the display?
display_smooth_stretch=yes
display_border=0
# display effect postprocessing: 0 none, 1 scanlines
display_effect=0

Personally, I use an XBox360 USB Pad for all my Emulation needs as fully working Drivers are available for Linux, Windows & OSX, its the one thing Microsoft have designed that's pretty much Perfect, apart from the non-standard Wireless! The Wireless version uses a 2.4 GHz Fz necessitating the need for a proprietary detector, which I have always found odd considering its a Microsoft product. It also provides enough Directional Inputs and Buttons for Emulating pretty much any System, Arcade or Console. It works with PiMAME4ALL straight out of the box once you have downloaded/set-up the Drivers (See my Guide Below).

I thought you may ask that! Unfortunately the USB Lead on the Wireless Controller only transfers power/charge, not input/output, but if you already have one get a detector, they are no longer officially available but 3rd Party ones can still be purchased for around £10/$15.

Again, check the cfg File!

[config]
volume=0

I haven't tested it myself but would suggest altering the value (+/- number) will change the Volume Setting.

There is also some additional info at the Project Home Page - http://code.google.com/p/mame4all-pi/

'If your sound is too quiet then do the following to fix that:
First get the playback device, type "amixer controls"
This will show the numid for the playback device, probably 3.
Now set the volume, type "amixer cset numid=3 90%".
Then reboot to make it permanent.'

Sorted the sound now, wish I could get rid of the black bars to the left and right, but my monitor is not 4:3 its a 22" widescreen. Is there a way around this? I know some games was made for the screen to be the other way around.

Well, that's dependant on if your talking about Vertical as opposed to Horizontal Monitor Placement in the Original Cab. Donkey Kong and Galaxians for instance were 'Vertically' placed and there is a Setting in the Config for this. However if your meaning you have a 16:9 Monitor, again, there is a cfg Setting where the Image can be 'Stretched' to fill the screen, however, the Aspect Ration will then be incorrect (most Arcade Cabs were released before 16:9 Monitors). When using Emulators I prefer having the Original A/R Correct (to prevent Image distortion), but its a personal choice. AdvanceMAME has many more Settings for changing these and other features (it was specifically designed for building home Cab's) but its performance is inferior to puddings MAME4ALL which has been specifically optimised for the RPi.

There's a link on the Homepage to a few, however, other that the ones there I have found most of the MAME Artwork (I possess quite a few versions) DOESNT seem to work with MAME4ALL as the fork/version is quite old and difficult to track down the correct files. Again, AdvanceMAME is far more compatible with Artwork.

Hi Welshy

Oh right, oh well. I still can't get over how brilliant all the games seem to run on the RPI, amazing. :D

Yup, pudding/squid certainly did an excellent job optimising MAME4ALL for the RPi. Its worth trying his Pi version of FBA too, its Neo-Geo compatibility is awesome (much better than MAME4ALL) and it even runs Capcom CPSII Titles which is pretty incredible!
